Speck becomes a delinquent in his teens and is eventually sentenced to psychiatric counseling, which he avoids by leaving town. Speck then marries a woman named Sissy, who leaves him for violent, humiliating abuse. After the divorce, Speck moves to Chicago, where he meets a student nurse named Sharon. One night in 1966, drunk bacon who needed money to travel to New Orleans broke into Sharon's dorm to rob her and her eight roommates. Speck went into a psychotic phase during the break-in and raped and tortured Sharon and seven of the other women. The only survivor, Sondra Azano, survives the night by hiding under a bed.

Speck spends the following days in a drunken state visiting motels and bars and leaving them to confess his crimes to a prostitute, who he then attacks. The officers, who respond to the disturbance and do not know that Speck is wanted for mass murder, merely confiscated his firearm. Speck ends up in a dump where he tries to commit suicide by slitting his wrists. Bacon survives and is hospitalized. Speck is arrested and identified by Sondra in the hospital. First, the death penalty is imposed for his crimes. Speck's sentence is reduced to 400 to 1200 years, which he is serving in the Joliet correctional center. Speck refuses to attend any of his hearings, is not cooperative in therapy, and is content to spend the rest of his life behind bars, where he died of a heart attack in 1991.
