The Church of Santa Maria della Pietà dei Turchini (actually: Chiesa di Santa Maria Incoronatella della Pietà dei Turchini , short: Chiesa della Pietà dei Turchini ) is a church in Naples that has a special meaning for the history of the music of this city. The name refers on the one hand to the Mater dolorosa or its artistic form of representation as the so-called Pietà , and on the other hand to the turquoise clothes of the children who were once housed in the associated orphanage .

The church is at 19 Via Medina; Concerts of sacred music from the Neapolitan school are being held here again today .

history

The brotherhood of the Bianchi dell'oratorio ("the whites of the oratory") picked up abandoned children on the street and originally placed them at the church of Santa Maria Incoronata on rua Catalana. As the community continued to grow, at the end of the 16th century they moved to via Medina, where this church was founded and next to it the orphanage Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini . It developed into one of the four important music schools in Naples and was incorporated into the Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella at the beginning of the 19th century .

description

Interior with a view of the apse and the right transept

The church was built from 1592 to 1595. It was originally much smaller, more like a chapel , and consisted only of the nave with side chapels . Thanks to generous donations, the transept , the dome and the apse were added between 1633 and 1639 , thus achieving the current dimensions.

The facade was created by Bartolomeo Vecchione in 1769–70 .

The ceiling of the church was adorned with paintings by Giuseppe Marullo in 1646, and Luca Giordano created the original dome fresco depicting the Assumption . Both were tragically destroyed by bombing during World War II, and are lost forever.

Stories of the birth of Christ in the right transept

The frescoes or altar paintings on the main altar , the ten side chapels and the two large cappelloni of the transept were created in part by the most important artists in Naples.
In the first chapel on the left there is a representation of the passage ( transito ) of St. Joseph by Paolo de Matteis ; the Annunciation in the third chapel has recently been attributed to Belisario Corenzio ; the fifth chapel features a guardian angel by Filippo Vitale , a burial by Luca Giordano and a resurrection of Christ by Paolo de Matteis.

The large chapel in the left transept was furnished with stories of the birth of Jesus by Giacinto Diano in the 1780s ; the Pietà on the high altar dates from the same period .

The left aisle leads to the sacristy with a birth of Christ by Juan Do, a Spanish painter from the Jusepe de Ribera area .

Luca Giordano: Finding the Cross

The marble main altar was created by Giovanni Atticciati from 1770 to 1773. In the apse of the church you can see the finding of the cross , which Luca Giordano originally created for the sacristy.

The chapel in the right transept is dedicated to St. Anne, the paintings were by Andrea and Nicola Vaccaro, as well as Giacomo Farelli; Andrea Vaccaro also painted the Passion of Christ in the fourth chapel on the right ; the Earthly Trinity in the third chapel on the right is by Battistello Caracciolo ; in the second chapel on the right is a rosary Madonna by Andrea Molinaro, on the side walls there are paintings by Luca Giordano: The holy hyacinth crosses the boristene and the Madonna appears to Saint Rosa of Lima . In the first side chapel from the right there are paintings by Giovan Battista Rossi and Francesco Romanelli .
