The Shinano ( Japanese 信 濃 川 , -gawa ) is the longest river in Japan with a length of 367 kilometers.
It has its source in Nagano Prefecture on Mount Kobu-Shigatake and also flows through Niigata . In Nagano prefecture, however, it is called Chikuma (Japanese 千 曲 川 , -gawa ). The Shinano has a catchment area of 11,900 km².
