Chinchilla is a city in the Australian state of Queensland with about 5,900 inhabitants . Chinchilla is located 293 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 185 kilometers east of Roma on the Warrego Highway . The city is located in the administrative region (LGA) Western Downs Region .
The city was founded in 1877 when the railway was built from Brisbane via Toowoomba to Dalby . The banks of Charley Creek seemed an ideal place for a city.
Agriculture was the main source of income for the city for a long time, especially cattle and pig breeding, but also wool production. With the raw materials boom of the past few years, the Kogan Creek power plant and other coal and gas projects, the city experienced strong growth and house prices rose significantly.
Chinchilla is also known as the melon capital of Australia with the annual Chinchilla Melon Festival .
During the floods in Queensland in 2011 , the place even had to be evacuated twice, about two weeks apart.
