The Chinese fire-bellied newt ( Cynops orientalis , syn .: Hypselotriton orientalis ), also Chinese dwarf newt , is a species from the family of real salamanders and the genus of fire-bellied newts ( Cynops ).

features

The Chinese fire-bellied newts have a uniform, deep black back, specimens with slightly lighter skin patches are rare. However, these color variants can change in the course of life. The ventral side is bright orange or red with black spots. The base of the limbs, the lower part of the caudal fin and the front part of the cloaca are colored orange, while the rear part of the cloaca is always black. Unlike the related species C. cyanurus or C. chenggongensis , Cynops orientalis does not have an orange spot behind the eye.

distribution

All species of the fire-bellied newt are common in China and Japan, mostly endemic to a relatively small area. The Chinese fire-bellied newt lives in a relatively large area in eastern China along the lower reaches of the Yangtze and adjacent provinces such as Henan , Hubei , Anhui , Jiangsu , Zhejiang , Jiangxi and Fujian . He prefers the low foothills of the mountains between 30 and 1000 m above sea level. Here it colonizes the standing water and feeds on mosquito larvae , water fleas , earthworms and nudibranchs .

attitude

The species is often also kept in terrariums , aquariums or paludariums . Their feeding behavior is predatory. The predominantly aquatic way of life of the newt should also be taken into account in the terrarium .
