Choe Son-hui (* 1964 ) is a North Korean diplomat and politician for the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK), who has been First Vice Foreign Minister and Deputy to the Supreme People's Assembly since April 2019 .

Life

Choe Son-hui is an adopted daughter of Ch'oe Yŏng-rim , who was Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea from 2010 to 2013, and thus Prime Minister. After completing school, she completed a course of study, during which she also had semesters abroad in the People's Republic of China , Austria and Malta . She then joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she worked in the research department and as a translator for the English language . In this capacity, she also participated in numerous meetings and negotiations in support of North Korea's chief negotiator for the North Korean nuclear weapons program , Vice Secretary of State Kim Kye-kwan, as well as in the six-party talks and other high-level diplomatic meetings, such as the previous US visit in August 2009 -President Bill Clinton in Pyongyang . In October 2010 she accompanied Kim Kye-kwan to a meeting in Beijing . Subsequently, she was head of the translation and administrative services department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She later moved to the main department for North America affairs and was most recently Director General of this main department in 2016 and at the same time director of the Institute for American Studies.

In February 2018, Choe initially succeeded Han Song-ryol as Deputy Foreign Minister and was responsible for North America in this role. As such, she was also chief negotiator in negotiations with the USA on nuclear issues until she was replaced by the previous ambassador to Spain Kim Hyok-chol in February 2019 . In the election on March 10, 2019 , she was elected for the first time as a deputy of the Supreme People's Assembly for the 14th electoral term. In April 2019, she finally succeeded Kim Kye-kwan and took over the post as First Deputy Foreign Minister.
