The Chomo Lönzo (also Chomo Lonzo , Chomolonzo , Chomolönzo , Jomolönzo or Lhamalangcho ) is a mountain in Tibet near the border with Nepal , about 5 km northeast of the Makalu in the Himalayas .

The Chomo Lönzo has three clearly defined peaks: the southernmost is the main peak with a height of 7804  m . A 7300  m high notch separates it from the 7567  m high central summit . The north-western peak is about 7200  m high.

While from Nepal the mountain is dominated by the nearby Makalu, the fifth highest mountain on earth, from the Kangshung valley in Tibet there is an imposing view of the Chomo Lönzo. The 3000 meter high northeast front is a challenge that has not been defeated to this day. Chomo Lönzo means something like "bird goddess", which the view from the north-west proves impressively.

The mountain was first climbed in 1954 by Frenchmen Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray as part of the exploration expedition to Makalu. They reached the summit via the gently sloping southwest saddle of Sakietang La ( 7214  m ), which separates the Chomo Lönzo from the Makalu. In the following year, the two also managed to climb this eight-thousander for the first time.
