Under the name " Chorus Viennensis ( Male Choir Former Vienna Boys' Choir ) / Choralschola der Wiener Hofburgkapelle ", former Vienna Boys' Choir have formed an association, on the one hand to appear together with the active Vienna Boys' Choir, on the other hand as an independent ensemble for male choir literature. Usually the ensemble sings under the name Chorus Viennensis; The stage name Choralschola of the Wiener Hofburgkapelle is used for areas of activity in connection with the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle.

Emergence

The Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburgkapelle was founded in 1952 and consists exclusively of former Vienna Boys' Choir . The initiative to found a choral school for the Hofburgkapelle came from Rector Josef Schnitt (1885–1955). Since the Schola was founded, the male ensemble has sung the Gregorian chorale in the Vienna Hofburg Chapel at the Latin Mass . Since 1994 the Choralschola has been a member of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle. Through continuous experience with Gregorian chant - always on the lookout for a contemporary, appealing interpretation based on scientific knowledge - the Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburg Chapel has developed into an internationally recognized vocal ensemble. The ongoing development has led to more and more performances outside of the Vienna Hofburg Chapel. A 6-part CD series - produced 1991–1997 with Philips Classics under the direction of Father Hubert Dopf SJ - gives an insight into the rich treasure of this highly developed art of unison music based on selected chants that follow the liturgical calendar. In many concerts or at the invitation of renowned festivals in Europe - in combination with a solo instrument or recitation - the meditative effect of Gregorian chant was successfully conveyed to the audience. Since 2012, the artistic direction of the Choralschola has been in the hands of the church musician Daniel Mair, who deals extensively with Gregorian chant at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (with Josef Kohlhäufl ) and at the Graz University of Art (with Franz Karl Praßl ) as part of his master's degree Has.

The choral schola of the Vienna Hofburgkapelle today comprises around 25 singers, of whom twelve men sing the Gregorian chant of the Proprium every Sunday at high mass. The aim is to train a schola of musically trained singers with practical experience in Gregorian chant instead of a highly professional group of soloists.

Old (polyphonic) music together with the Vienna Boys' Choir

Since 2002, the Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburgkapelle has been devoting itself - in addition to Gregorian chant - supplemented by boys 'voices (active Vienna Boys' Choir) and in collaboration with René Clemencic to the music of the founding time of the Maximilian Hofkapelle in the late 15th century (music by Heinrich Isaak , Josquin Desprez , and others). The cast is based on the original performance practice with boys in the superius and male voices in the lower voices (altus, tenor, baryton and bass). For this reason, in contrast to the many soloist ensembles who dedicate themselves to this music, music is also played in small choirs. The peculiarity of this work lies in the exclusive use of the original white mensural notation.

Chorus Viennensis

In addition, the Choralschola has been able to gain experience and celebrate successes in all directions of male choir literature since the 1950s with an expanded cast as the male choir of former Vienna Boys' Choir under the name Chorus Viennensis. Together with the Vienna Boys' Choir, all forms of mixed choir literature are cultivated in this formation in concerts and CD productions.
