Usually the ensemble sings under the name Chorus Viennensis; The stage name Choralschola of the Wiener Hofburgkapelle is used for areas of activity in connection with the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle.

Choral history

The Chorus Viennensis was founded in 1952 and consists exclusively of former Vienna Boys' Choir. In addition to working together with the Vienna Boys' Choir, the choir has been devoting itself to maintaining male choir literature of all stylistic epochs since 1970, so that an extensive repertoire and a wealth of experience are now available in this genre.

The choir repeatedly proves its versatility in numerous concerts and recordings. The quality and efficiency of the choir is evident, for example, in the three CDs produced with Philips Classics with selected male choirs by Franz Schubert or in the CD with male choir pieces by Anton Bruckner and Hugo Wolf recorded with the ORF . The Chorus Viennensis has also made several sound recordings with the Vienna Boys' Choir. Particularly noteworthy are the Bach recordings under Nikolaus Harnoncourt , which set new standards in the interpretation of early music in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of these recordings together with the Concentus Musicus Vienna have been awarded international prizes such as the Grand Prix du Disque . At the 5th International Male Choir Competition "Franz Schubert" in Vienna in 1988, in which choirs from seven countries took part, the choir won both first prize and interpretation prize. In addition, invitations to concerts abroad underline the international competitiveness of the Chorus Viennensis.

Over the years, well-known choir teachers such as Ferdinand Grossmann , Hans Gillesberger , Gerald Trabesinger , Uwe Theimer , Uwe Christian Harrer , Guido Mancusi , Walter Lochmann , Raoul Gehringer and Michael Grohotolsky led the choir . Michael Schneider has been the musical director of the Chorus Viennensis since 2018.

The choir currently consists of around 50 singers of different ages. In addition to cultivating male choir singing, one of the declared goals of the Chorus Viennensis is to offer its members the opportunity to be musically active in a community that combines two things: the Vienna Boys' Choir past and a love of music.

Choralschola of the Vienna Hofburg Chapel
