Chris Higginbottom

Christopher Clifford "Chris" Higginbottom (born April 26, 1977 in London ) is a British modern jazz musician ( drums ) .

Higginbottom took piano lessons at the age of seven. A year later he joined the Waltham Abbey Choir. In the meantime his interest shifted to jazz and from the age of eleven he took lessons as a drummer, also with Alan Jackson . At the age of 16 he became a member of the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra and also played with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra . Higginbottom then studied at the Royal Academy of Music , where his first recordings were made in 1997 (including with Orlando le Fleming ). During this time he also worked on recordings by Edward Benstead ( Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music 1998 ). After graduating in 2000, he continued to work in Stefan Heckel's band (with Julian Argüelles , Christian Weber ; album Horch , 1999). With his quartet, conducted together with alto saxophonist Sam Mayne, he won the 2000 Perrier Young Jazz Awards . Higginbottom was part of a contemporary jazz quartet in the early 2000s under the direction of saxophonist Ian East and pianist David Beebee, the fourth member of which was bassist Robin Mullarkey. Higginbottom also played with Guy Barker , Christine Tobin and Tim Garland . In 2002 he went to New York, where he studied at The New School and performed with musicians such as Gary Bartz and Ingrid Jensen . During this time he also made his debut album One , which he recorded with Seamus Blake , Aaron Goldberg and Orlando le Fleming (for Basho Records ).

In the 2010s, Higginbottom a. a. with Gilad Atzmon and Alan Barnes ( The Lowest Common Denominator ), Kyle Eastwood ( In Transit ) and Thomas Cawley ( Catenaccio (2018), among others with Gareth Lockrane ). With Sam Burgess , Alex Garnett , Freddie Gavita and James Pearson he formed The Ronnie Scott's Club Quintet , with whom he released the album The Sound of Soho in 2016 . In 2020 he was a member of Ronnie Scott's All Stars , who played the first concert after the lockdown in the club of the same name . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 24 recording sessions between 1997 and 2019, according to Tom Lord . Higginbottom lives in London.
