Christa Fonatsch

Christa Fonatsch (born April 4, 1943 ) is an Austrian human geneticist .

Life

Fonatsch reached in 1961 at the School of the Ursulines Graz the graduation with honors. She studied in Graz and Würzburg and in 1968 earned a Dr. phil. She then worked at the Institute for Medical Biology and Human Genetics at the University of Graz. With Alfred Gropp at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , she improved her knowledge in the field of cytogenetics and meiosis . In 1973 Fonatsch moved from Graz to the Institute for Human Genetics (Head: Gebhard Flatz) at the Hannover Medical School to set up a cytogenic laboratory there. In 1981 she completed her habilitation with a thesis on sister chromatid exchange . She set up the tumor cytogenetics there in Hanover (in collaboration with Volker Diehl ) .

From 1983 to 1995, Fonatsch was C3 professor for human genetics at the Medical University of Lübeck under Eberhard Schwinger . In 1988, she rejected a call to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from. Since 1995 she has been full professor for medical biology and head of the institute for human genetics she established with cytogenetic and molecular genetic diagnostic facilities as well as genetic counseling at the Medical University of Vienna . Fonatsch retired in 2010, and in 2012 she took on the position of university councilor at the Medical University of Innsbruck .

Like Janet Rowley for CML and Lore Zech for Burkitt's lymphoma , Fonatsch was able to demonstrate the pathogenetic , clinical, prognostic and therapeutic significance of the chromosome status for various leukemias and lymphomas . She published over 300 specialist articles and supervised more than 20 doctoral students.

In addition to research, teaching and patient care, Christa Fonatsch performed numerous managerial and advisory functions for various professional policy bodies, including the professors' assembly at the Medical University of Lübeck, the German Medical Association , the Professional Association of Medical Genetics , the German Society for Human Genetics , the Senate of the Medical University of Vienna, the European Leukemia Net (ELN) and the Austrian Society for Human Genetics .

In 2013 Fonatsch became an honorary member of the German Society for Hematology and Oncology (DGHO). For 2018/2019 she was awarded the Johann Georg Zimmermann Medal . In November 2019, she was awarded the Styrian State of Honor for Science, Research and Art .
