Christa Meier , née Stangl , (born December 6, 1941 in Regensburg ) was the first female mayor of Regensburg ( SPD ) from 1990 to 1996 and thus the first woman in this position in a major Bavarian city.

Career

The trained teacher joined the SPD in 1966 and was elected to the Regensburg City Council in 1972, to which she belonged continuously until April 2020. For City Council election in 2020 it did not occur more

In 1978 she moved into the Bavarian state parliament , where she was the first woman to chair a committee (for cultural and educational policy). In 1990 she left the state parliament and was the first woman to be elected mayor, succeeding Lord Mayor Friedrich Viehbacher (CSU), who had ruled for 12 years. Their term of office was very difficult because there were no stable majorities in the city council. Nevertheless, with the closure of the east-west route Thundorferstrasse and Keplerstrasse as a thoroughfare in both directions, a very controversial measure to calm traffic in the old town was implemented for the first time. As a result, her re-election as Lord Mayor failed in 1996. Her successor was Hans Schaidinger (CSU), during whose term of office the closure of Thundorferstrasse was lifted again.

After the end of her work as Lord Mayor, Christa Meier took over the post of Rector at the St. Wolfgang School, a primary school in the Regensburg district of Kumpfmühl .
