Christel Meier-Staubach

Christel Meier-Staubach (born July 17, 1942 as Christel Meier in Greifswald ) is a German classical and Middle Latin philologist .

Christel Meier is the daughter of a pastor. In 1962 she passed the Abitur at the Jungmannschule in Eckernförde . From 1962 to 1969 she studied Greek, Latin and Middle Latin Philology as well as German at the Universities of Marburg, Kiel and Münster. In 1969 she passed the first state examination in Greek and German. With Friedrich Ohly she received her doctorate in 1975 with the thesis Gemma spiritalis. Method and use of gemstone allegories from early Christianity to the 18th century. Until 1983 she worked as a research assistant at the Collaborative Research Center for Medieval Studies in Münster and was a lecturer at the German Institute and the Seminar for Medieval Latin Philology at the University of Münster . From 1983 to 1995 she taught Latin studies at the University of Wuppertal as a professor . In 1989/90 she was Dean of the Department of Linguistics and Literature. She refused an offer for the C 4 professorship for Middle Latin Philology in Kiel. Meier-Staubach received appointments for Middle Latin Philology in Bonn and Münster in 1995. In 1995 she succeeded Peter von Moos at the Middle Latin Seminary in Münster. From 1995 to 2008 she was the director of the Department of Middle Latin Philology at the University of Münster. Since 2012 she has been a senior professor in the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics in the Cultures of Pre-Modernism and Modernity”.

Meier-Staubach was editor of the early medieval studies up to the 50th volume . She has been a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences since 1998 . From 1994 to 1998 she was chairman of the Central Latin Working Group in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Meier-Staubach received the research award of the University of Münster in 2005 for her achievements. Her main areas of work include Middle Latin literature from a comparative point of view, hermeneutics , symbolism, allegory , medieval literary theory, text and image, encyclopedia and specialist literature from the Middle Ages and early modern times, visionary and commentary literature as well as the drama of the Middle Ages and early modern times.
