Christen Brun (painter)

Christen Johanson Brun (born May 30, 1828 in Bergen , Norway ; † July 15, 1905 in Christiania ) was a Norwegian history and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Brun was the son of provost Johan Lyder Brun (1802-1865) and his wife Karen Claudine Ulrikke (Ulrica), née Pavels (1802-1874), born. After first lessons with the landscape painter Hans Leganger Reusch (1800-1854) from 1845 and with the portrait painter Johan Gørbitz (1782-1853) from 1847, he studied painting from 1848 to 1850 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There was Karl Ferdinand son 's class. In the years 1850/1851 Brun was a member of the artists' association Malkasten . After a stay in Rome from 1850 to 1852, he returned to Düsseldorf . From 1852 he was a private student of Otto Mengelberg there . From 1860 Brun worked as a drawing teacher at the Royal Drawing School Christiania for about twenty years. Harriet Backer was his student there in 1867/1868. From 1870 he also worked as a technical conservator ( restorer ) at the Norwegian National Gallery . In 1876 he stayed in Modena , in 1889 he traveled to Rome, Paris and Berlin .

Brun created a large number of paintings based on models, especially religious works by Adolph Tidemand , Carl Bloch , Mengelberg, Guido Reni and Rubens . At his age he also painted landscapes .
