Christian (Schleswig-Holstein-Ærø)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Ærø (* 26. November 1570 , † 14. June 1633 ) was the first and last divided Duke of Ærø (German: Aero) without sovereignty. He was the eldest son of Duke Johann (1545–1622) and inherited the island when he died. His father had grouped the small farms into three estates: Gravensteen ( Gråsten ), Seebygaard ( Søbygård ) and God's gift ( Gudsgave ). So Christian took up residence in Gravensteen. In 1624 he built the Wuderup (Voderup) estate, for which he bought the land from the church. He actually wanted to become Bishop of Strasbourg, but that failed. Christian was the Protestant canon of the Strasbourg cathedral chapter from 1587 to 1604, but according to an agreement with the victorious Catholic cathedral chapter members he continued to receive his income as an unmarried clergyman until around 1619.

He had a daughter with his housekeeper Katharina Griebel (* 1570 in Lütjenburg ; † 1640 on Ærø): Sophie Griebel (* 1600). In order to take care of her later, he gave her two large houses in 1629 in Derøskøbing and the island of Dejrø . In addition, she was exempt from all taxes. After the Duke's death, Sophie married his manager Peder Christensen Pilegaard, who then worked as a merchant in Ærøskøbing.

His brothers or their descendants shared the inheritance:

  • Philipp von Glücksburg , inherited Ærøskøbing and Wuderup
  • Friedrich von Norburg inherited the Gravensteen estate. In 1636 he sold it to his brother, the Duke of Glücksburg
  • Joachim Ernst I. von Plön , got Seebygaard. The part remained in the possession of different Plön lines.
  • Johann Christian von Sonderburg , the eldest son of Alexander von Sonderburg, received a gift from God.

The division of the island into many small areas resulted in a complicated tax administration and a lively black market.
