Christian August of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1768–1810)
Christian August (born July 9, 1768 in Augustenborg ; † May 28, 1810 in Kvidinge hed, Schonen ), Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg , was Crown Prince of Sweden as Karl August .
Life
He was the third son of Duke Friedrich Christian (1721–1794). He took up Danish military service early on and, after serving under Archduke Karl in the Austrian army from 1796-1801 , became Commander- in -Chief in Norway in 1803 and excelled there in 1808 during the war between Denmark and Sweden .
This moved his uncle, the childless King Karl XIII. of Sweden to adopt him in 1809 and to have him elected heir to the throne by the Swedish Diet . After changing his original name Christian to Karl, which Swedes hated, he swore the oath on January 24th, 1810, but died on May 28th, suddenly struck by a blow in a revue.
This quick death sparked rumors of poisoning, and Axel von Fersen , who as Reichsmarschall brought the body to Stockholm, fell victim to popular anger as a result of suspicion. As a result of the later investigation, the Fersen's family was found to be innocent. The frivolously conducted investigations into the death leave undecided whether poisoning was the cause of the death.
