Christian Bernhard (born November 15, 1963 in Lustenau ) is an Austrian doctor and politician ( ÖVP ). From June 6, 2012 to November 6, 2019, Bernhard was a member of the Vorarlberg state government as the regional councilor for health and disability assistance .

Career

Christian Bernhard was born on November 15, 1963 in the market town of Lustenau in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley. He graduated in 1982 Matura at Bundesgymnasium Dornbirn and then studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck . There he received his doctorate in 1989 as a doctor of general medicine (Dr. med. Univ.) And then began training as a general practitioner , where he was a regular doctor at the Dornbirn hospital .

In 1993 Bernhard joined the state of Vorarlberg and in 1994 became head of the health department in the Bludenz district administration . From 2001 to 2011 he worked as a medical officer and deputy head of the medical department in the office of the Vorarlberg state government. On July 1, 2011, he was appointed head of the medical department and therefore held the professional title of State Medical Director .

After the surprising resignation of Provincial Councilor Rainer Gögele on June 1, 2012, Christian Bernhard was elected as his successor as Provincial Health Councilor in the Landtag session on June 6th. He took over the health and disability assistance departments in the Wallner I state government from his predecessor . At the same time as he was elected to the state government, Bernhard joined the ÖVP Vorarlberg , and on June 29th he joined the ÖAAB . In the Wallner II state government, which was sworn in in October 2014 , Christian Bernhard took over both the health and culture department. In the run-up to the state elections in Vorarlberg 2019 , Christian Bernhard announced on February 4, 2019 that he would no longer stand for the election and that he would leave the state government with the successor government sworn in. With the inauguration of the new state government on November 6, 2019, he resigned as state health councilor, and was succeeded by Martina Rüscher . After leaving politics, Christian Bernhard was re-employed as a medical expert in the office of the Vorarlberg state government.

Christian Bernhard is single and lives in Dornbirn .
