biography

Forstner studied physics at the University of Regensburg and graduated with a diploma in 2002. At the Chair of General History of Science , he then started work on his dissertation on the history of quantum mechanics in the Cold War. After a four-month stay at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in 2005, he completed his doctorate in 2006 at the University of Regensburg. He then spent a year as a postdoc at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna , where he began his research on the history of nuclear research. From 2007 to 2017 he continued this work as a research assistant at the Ernst Haeckel House of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena . In June 2017, on the basis of this research, Forstner completed his habilitation at the University of Jena and received the license to teach the history of natural sciences. From April 2017 he worked as a research assistant in the Collaborative Research Center 1095 Discourses on Weaknesses and Resource Regimes at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main , later as a visiting researcher. Since September 2019 he has been researching the history of optical device construction as a Heisenberg Fellow at the University of Jena.

He has headed the Association for the History of Physics of the German Physical Society since 2011 and regularly organizes the Association's meetings. From 2009 to 2013 he was Vice President and Treasurer of the Commission for the History of Modern Physics of the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science / Division for the History of Science . From 2008 until today he has been a liaison professor at the Hans Böckler Foundation . In addition, he participates in scientific life as a reviewer for numerous science history journals.
