Christian Friedrich Schmidt , also: Christoph Friedrich Schmid , (born November 20, 1741 in Röglitz , † May 19, 1778 in Wittenberg ) was a German philosopher and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Born as the son of the pastor Christoph Schmidt, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1755 , where he studied theology and in 1762 earned the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. During his time in Leipzig he was under the influence of his uncle Christian August Crusius , who had been an opponent of Christian Wolff , and was significantly influenced by him in the spirit of Lutheran orthodoxy . After Schmidt was accepted as an adjunct to the philosophical faculty in 1763 , he was made an extraordinary professorship in philosophy in 1767 .

In 1768 he acquired the baccalaureate of the theological faculty and on March 30, 1772 became fourth professor of the theological faculty of the University of Wittenberg , with which he became an alumnus of the electoral scholarship holders. On May 5th of the same year he received his doctorate in theology. Schmidt was the first to introduce philosophy at the Wittenberg theological faculty, although he had difficulty finding audiences. In addition, he interpreted the biblical exegesis of the New Testament in his lectures and was polemical on the chair.

Under the impression of events such as the Thorner blood court or the expulsion of the Salzburg exiles by Leopold Anton von Firmian , it was directed against the representatives of the Roman Catholic Church . He also opposed all deviants from Lutheran controversial theology. Above all, he turned against the advocates of the increasingly established Enlightenment . Thus he still clung to the old doctrinal rules of the Lutheran orthodoxy that was coming to an end, but was no longer such a rigid representative. Schmidt, who also took part in the organizational tasks of the Wittenberg University in his professorship, was also the rector of the university in the winter semester of 1774 .
