Christian August Crusius (born June 10, 1715 in Leuna , † October 18, 1775 in Leipzig ) was a German philosopher and Protestant theologian.

Life

He was the son of a pastor and studied philosophy and theology at the University of Leipzig , where he became an associate professor of philosophy in 1744 and a full professor of theology in 1750. Alongside Johann Franz Buddeus , he became one of the sharpest opponents of Gottfried Leibniz 's and Christian Wolff's philosophy . Against this he advocated a unity of positive revelation and reason and rejected the ontological proof of God . It was not appreciated until late by Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg and Franz Delitzsch . In 1767 he was the first Leipzig professor to take over the tutorial post of president in the Wendische Prediger-Gesellschaft zu Leipzig (the later Landsmannschaft Sorabia) founded in 1716 and reorganized it: In addition to the Wendish sermons, the members were to give lectures on other Wendish topics and talk about them change.

Crusius exerted influence on the Kantian philosophy, although Kant ultimately rejected many Crusian elements of thought.
