Christian Gerber (theologian)

Christian Gerber (born May 27, 1660 in Görnitz near Borna ; † March 25, 1731 in Lockwitz ) was a German Lutheran theologian and writer.

Life

Gerber was born as the son of a preacher in Görnitz , west of Borna , which fell victim to open-cast lignite mining around 1960. He attended school in Zeitz , enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1679 and continued his studies at the University of Wittenberg in 1684 . There he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree from the philosophical faculty and devoted himself to theology.

In 1685 he became pastor in Rothschönberg and in 1690 in Lockwitz . Gerber wrote the hymn "Good for him who has God as a friend". He made a name for himself as a writer in the field of German proverbs and the history of morals of the 17th century. His writings were printed well into the 18th century.

His son Christian Gottlob Gerber also worked as a theologian in Lockwitz.
