Christian Giordano (2008)

Christian Giordano (born October 27, 1945 in Lugano , Switzerland ; † December 29, 2018 in Vilnius , Lithuania ) was a Swiss social scientist and from 1989 full professor of social anthropology at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . He was Dr. hc from the University of the West Timișoara in Romania and the Ilia State University in Tbilisi .

Life

Before he began to study sociology , ethnology , art history and Romance studies at the University of Heidelberg , he first studied law and economics at the University of Bern .

In 1973 he became a sociologist at the University of Heidelberg with a dissertation entitled “Craftsmen and farmers associations in Sicilian society. Guilds, craftsmen's confraternities and workers' aid associations between 1750 and 1890 ” .

In 1987 he completed his habilitation with the Venia Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at the University of Frankfurt am Main with the text "The Cheated in History. Overlay Mentality and Overlay Rationality in Mediterranean Societies". His main research interests included political and economic anthropology, ethnicity, nationalism, citizenship, rural restructuring in Southeast and Central Europe, political culture in the Mediterranean and the problems of multicultural coexistence in Southeast Asia.

In a highly acclaimed article for the Federal Commission against Racism , he proposed to abolish the legal principle that everyone is equal before the law in order to better integrate immigrants from distant cultures. The alternative would be legal pluralism .

Giordano created one of the first scientifically based concepts for European cultural areas , which he called "historical regions of Europe" . Giordano died in late 2018 at the age of 73.
