Christian Gottfried Krause

Christian Gottfried Krause (baptized April 17, 1719 in Winzig , Duchy of Wohlau ; † May 4, 1770 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer, composer and music writer.

Life

Krause was born into a musical family. His father was a town piper and Christian Gottfried learned from him to play the flute , violin , piano and timpani . Krause studied law at the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt in Frankfurt an der Oder , where he heard lectures from Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten , among others . Baumgarten's conception of aesthetics had a great influence on Krause. In 1746 he went to Berlin.

His writing On Musical Poetry (1753) marked the beginning of the First Berlin Song School .

In addition, he composed chamber music, piano works and symphonies, some of which have been preserved. References to lost works can be found in catalogs from the 18th century.
