Christian Grillenberger (born October 14, 1941 in Pappenheim ; † May 25, 1998 in Kassel ) was a German mathematician who was particularly concerned with ergodic theory .

Life

Christian Grillenberger was born in Pappenheim in 1941 as the son of a Protestant pastor . He studied at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and received his doctorate there in 1970. Dr. rer. nat. with the dissertation Two combinatorial constructions for strictly ergodic consequences . His doctoral supervisor was Konrad Jacobs (the second speaker was Heinz Bauer ). In his dissertation and in subsequent work, he first constructed K systems and Bernoulli systems with clear ergodic dimensions .

He then moved to the Institute for Mathematical Stochastics at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , where he worked as a research assistant from 1971 to 1982 with one interruption . There he worked closely with Ulrich Krengel , for example in the proof of the Grillenberger-Krengel theorem (Math. Z.149, 131–154 (1976)).

In the winter semester 1975/76 he qualified as a professor in mathematics. In 1976 his work Ergodic theory on compact spaces came out, which he wrote together with Manfred Denker and Karl Sigmund . His habilitation thesis went into this much-cited work.

From April 1980 he tried to complete an agricultural apprenticeship. He broke off his apprenticeship in July 1981.

In 1982 he switched to the mathematics and computer science department of the University of Kassel as an academic advisor and private lecturer . In 1997, Grillenberger was appointed Associate Professor . On May 25, 1998, at the age of 56, he died of a heart attack in Kassel .
