Christian Kuchler

Christian Kuchler (born October 21, 1974 in Osterhofen , Lower Bavaria ) is a German history teacher and historian . He is a university professor for didactics of social sciences at RWTH Aachen .

Life

After graduating from high school in Vilshofen , Kuchler studied history and German for teaching at high schools from 1994 to 2000 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Passau . In 2006 he passed the second state examination and then worked as a teacher at various schools.

In 2006, Kuchler started at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with the thesis “Church and Cinema. Catholic film work in Bavaria 1945–1965 ”with Walter Ziegler . After this contemporary historical work, he increasingly turned to the didactics of history. In this research area he worked as a research assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and as an academic advisor at the University of Regensburg . In the summer semester of 2012, he accepted a call to the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, where he built up the newly established teaching and research area of ​​didactics in social sciences at the Institute for Political Science at RWTH Aachen University.

Between 2015 and 2019, Kuchler headed the teacher training center (LBZ) and was the rector's representative for teacher training for the entire university.

Research priorities

The didactics of history are at the center of Kuchler's research. The focus of his work is the period between 1800 and the present. In addition to the importance of historical places for history lessons, the use of the media and work with contemporary witnesses in historical-political education, he deals with the role of religion in historical learning. In addition, Kuchler continues to research in the field of contemporary history. Together with Jörg Zedler ( University of Regensburg ), he presented a volume on the history of his hometown entitled “Osterhofen in the Age of Extreme”, published at the end of the Second World War in Baden and Bavaria and published educational studies on the history of German schools abroad. Dominik Herzner's dissertation, “German Schools Abroad in Spain: Foreign Cultural Policy Between Conflict and Cooperation”, was awarded the ifa Research Prize for Foreign Cultural Policy by the Stuttgart Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations .

At his chair, Kuchler works closely with the International School of Holocaust Studies at the Israeli Yad Vashem Memorial . In addition, he works as a textbook author for the subject of history and coordinates the humanities student teaching and learning laboratory “GoAix”.

Since 2012, the international focus of his work has been the further training of Egyptian history teachers. As part of the transformation partnership of the Goethe-Institut Cairo, an Arabic-language method manual was recently created that is used for advanced training in Egypt.
