Christian Ludolph Mettcker (born February 23, 1786 in Aurich , † January 25, 1862 in Jever ) was a German printer and newspaper publisher .

Life

Mettcker came from Aurich and completed an apprenticeship as a printer there. Nothing is known about its further origin. From 1803 to 1808 and from 1811 he was employed as an assistant in the printing works of the book printer Johann Hinrich Ludolph Borgeest, also from Aurich, which had existed since 1788. The Jeverian weekly advertisements and news have been published there since 1791 . When Borgeest died in March 1816, Mettcker, with the support of the Jever magistrate, applied for a newspaper license from the government of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg . Since Mettcker also had the assets to deposit the required deposit and to modernize the printing plant, he was finally granted the license and was able to prevail over competitors because of his knowledge of the industry. Mettcker expanded the newspaper, which initially appeared weekly, continuously in the following years and was able to secure a permanent base of subscribers. In 1817 the name was changed to Jeverisches Wochenblatt , which was followed in 1830 by an adaptation to the title Jeversches Wochenblatt used today . In 1844 the supplement Jeverland News added to the advertising and announcement gazette. During Mettcker's lifetime the newspaper appeared twice a week (from 1852), then three times a week (from 1859) and later, from 1890, finally daily. In order to cope with the increased workload, Mettcker took his two sons into the publishing house in 1854, which has since operated under the name CL Mettcker & Sons .

In addition to the Wochenblatt, Mettcker had the New History Calendar , which still exists today, printed since 1834 and, as a second pillar, built up a book publisher specializing in local and regional history literature. He also published other newspapers in the East Frisian area of Jevers, such as the Anzeiger für Harlingerland from 1862 onwards .

family

Mettcker was with the Jever merchant daughter Johanne Catharina born. Friese (1798–1879) married. The couple had two daughters and two sons, Johann Ludolph (1823–1913) and Andreas Wilhelm (1825–1900), who ran the publishing house together after their father's death.
