biography

Christian Ludvig Tillisch, close confidante of Christian VIII.

Christian Ludvig was the son of Colonel Georg Wilhelm Tillisch (1760–1845) and Augusta Elisabeth von Stemann (1770–1835). In 1830 he married Comtesse Henriette Vilhelmine Lerche-Lerchenborg (1801-1887). Together they had the children Christian Frederik Tillisch (1833-1900), Auguste Elisabeth Tillisch (1835-?), Cornelia Emma Sophie Louise Tillisch (1837-1904) and Frederik "Fritz" Georg Christopher Christian Tillisch (1841-1900).

After graduating from high school in 1816, he studied law and passed his state examination in 1820. As a result, he was a lawyer in the Danish Pension Chamber and received the title of Chamberlain . From 1825 to 1830 Christian Ludvig Tillisch was bailiff of the Faroe Islands with his seat in Tórshavn . In the Faroe Islands , Christian Ludvig Tillisch is considered to be the founder of the State Library of the Faroe Islands . His brother Frederik Tillisch succeeded him in his office as governor of the North Atlantic archipelago. Both are seen there as far-sighted men who campaigned early on for the lifting of the Danish trade monopoly , albeit without immediate success.

Back in Denmark, Christian Ludvig Tillisch became bailiff of Aabenraa and Løgumkloster in 1830 . In 1835 and 1838 he was Frederik VI's deputy . at the first two meetings of the Faroe Islands. On April 15, 1841, Christian VIII appointed him cabinet secretary, which made him a close confidante of the monarch and is said to have had considerable influence on him. Politically, he was a conservative who was in opposition to both the Eider Danes and the German national movement in Schleswig-Holstein.

Christian Ludvig Tillisch died in 1844 at the age of only 47 of a heart attack while traveling through the Duchy of Schleswig with the king . Christian VIII described this at the time as a “deep loss” and assessed the value of Tillisch's knowledge of the complicated conditions in the duchies as irreplaceable and ultimately “impossible to put into words”.

Christian Ludvig Tillisch was awarded the command of the Dannebrog Order in 1843 .
