Live and act

Hudtwalcker came from a respected Hamburg merchant family. He was a son of Senior Elder Jacob Hinrich Hudtwalcker (born November 20, 1710 Altona ; † October 28, 1781 Hamburg) and his wife Sarah, b. Ehlers. His father, himself the son of a cheese merchant in Altona, had founded the company Hudtwalcker & Co. , which still exists today, after an apprenticeship with the herring, oil and fish product dealer Meinert von Winthem, in April 1743 , which specialized in trading in fish oil. Johann Michael Hudtwalcker was his brother and took over the company.

After completing his theology studies, he became pastor in Malente in the Lübeck monastery in 1786 and pastor in Neukirchen (Ostholstein) after 1789 .

Pulpit of the Garrison Church in Copenhagen

He became widely known through his sermons and writings; In 1801 he therefore received a call as the main pastor who had earned a good name, so in 1801 he was appointed as the main pastor and German garrison preacher at the church of Mr. Zebaoth ( garrison church ) in Copenhagen . During this time he was also the tutor of his nephew, the later Hamburg Senator Martin Hieronymus Hudtwalcker . Nicolaus Hudtwalcker was also his nephew. When he spoke out in favor of surrender during the siege of Copenhagen in 1807 , he incurred the wrath of the then crown prince. When this 1808 as Friedrich VI. ascended the throne, Hudtwalcker's position became untenable.

In 1809 he applied for the pastor's position in Neuenbrook in the Steinburg office, which was then part of Denmark, and took up this position in 1810. In 1814 he was elected chief and monastery preacher in Itzehoe. At the same time he was appointed royal Danish consistorial advisor and provost of the Münsterdorf provost, the largest in the Duchy of Holstein with 22 parishes .

In 17821 he was admitted to the Augusta Masonic Lodge in Göttingen to the three flames .
