Christian Walther (theologian, 1655)

Christian Walther (born July 31, 1655 in Norkitten ; † January 17, 1717 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of pastor Christian Walther († 1679) and his wife Rosina Boltz initially received lessons from private teachers. When he was twelve he had attended school in Kneiphof , where he continued his education for six years. In 1673 he began studying at the University of Königsberg , which he continued at the University of Leipzig and at the University of Jena. Here were Johannes Olearius (1639–1713) , Johann Benedict Carpzov II , Johann Adam Schertzer , Johannes Musaeus , Johann Wilhelm Baier , Friedemann Bechmann , Johannes Frischmuth (1619–1687), Kaspar Posner (1626–1700) and Valentin Veltheim (1645 –1700) were his formative instructors. On December 11, 1677, he acquired the degree of master's degree in Jena.

Returned to Königsberg, he received a position as private tutor with the Prussian Minister of State Johann Dietrich von Tettau (1620–1687), with whose sons he stayed in Thorn for half a year . After the death of his father in 1680 he took over his pastor's office in Norkitten and in 1681 became pastor in Sackheim. In 1701 he had been given an extraordinary professorship in theology at the University of Königsberg. He became assessor of the Samland consistory and a foreign member of the Electoral Brandenburg Society of Sciences . The Brandenburg University of Frankfurt awarded him a doctorate in theology in May 1702. In Königsberg he was appointed the fourth full professor of theology.

After being appointed inspector of the synagogue in 1704, after the death of Friedrich Deutsch in 1709 he became the third full professor and after the death of Gottfried Wegner he became the second full professor in the theological faculty. In addition, Walther took part in the organizational tasks of the Königsberg University as prorector in the winter semester of 1712/13. After he was elected rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1716/17 , he died of a fever. Walther had mainly concentrated on the oriental languages ​​and, as a theologian, represented the position of Lutheran orthodoxy .

His marriage to Anne Groll in 1680 resulted in five sons and three daughters. The sons of Dr. Johann Dietrich Walther, Christian Walther and Bernhard Benedikt Walther, who survived their father.
