Life

Christian Wilhelm Flügge, born in 1772 in Winsen an der Luhe (in the Lüneburg region), was the son of a local citizen who had initially designated him for his trade. Flügge studied philosophy and theology in Göttingen from 1790. At the Georg-August-Universität he became a repetitionist in 1794 , private lecturer in 1797 and second university preacher in 1798. His Göttingen lectures and literary works were characterized less by depth and originality than by clarity, dexterity and versatile reading. His work was mainly in the field of the history of religion and theological literature. Christian Wilhelm Flügge wrote many articles on journals, e.g. B. for Schleußner's and Stäudlin's theological library. Flügge shows on the one hand the great influence of Kantian philosophy on theology and religious studies, on the other hand the predominantly historical and literary-historical direction of the Göttingen theology at the end of the 18th century. As his biographer writes, Flügge was not a mere room scholar, but a man of practical life, a willing and experienced advisor and helper in all official and private matters. As a superintendent and later inhibited by illness, Flügge found no more time to continue his scientific and literary work.

Flügge left Göttingen in 1801, having shortly before married the daughter of the Consistorial Councilor Illing from Alfeld (Leine) . From 1801 he was a preacher in Scharnebeck and from 1806 in his native town Pattensen (Winsen) . In 1823 Flügge became superintendent in Salzhausen, where he was involved in many pastoral and official business. He died in Salzhausen in 1828.

His son Ludwig Flügge (1808–1883) was a pastor in Hanover and a co-founder of the mission association.
