Christian Wilhelm von Faber du Faur (born August 18, 1780 in Stuttgart ; † February 6, 1857 there ) was a Württemberg lawyer, major general and military painter.

Life

The son of a colonel of the Württemberg cavalry studied law and entered civil service as a lawyer in 1802. Outside of his job he was also active as an artist: in addition to depictions of history and landscapes , he created numerous caricatures . In 1809 he volunteered in the Württemberg army and became a second lieutenant in the light infantry . In view of the level of education and drawing talent, he was transferred to the artillery the following year.

In 1812 he took part in the Russian campaign under Napoleon as a first lieutenant in the French III. Army corps, to which part of the Württemberg Rhine Confederation contingent was subordinate. He made sketches almost every day, which he published in 1831 together with Major Kausler. The work With Napoleon in Russia contains a multitude of colored drawings that depict the entire campaign and retreat and thus acquire the character of an eyewitness account. The picture In the area of Smorgony , December 3, 1812 was shown in the 2011 exhibition Napoleon and Europe. Dream and Trauma shown in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.

He became a member of the French Legion of Honor and was one of only 1,000 Württemberg soldiers who survived the campaign in good health.

In 1829 he was promoted to major , in 1836 to lieutenant colonel , in 1840 to colonel and in 1849 to major general. Since 1839 he was military representative of Württemberg at the military commission of the German Confederation in Frankfurt. In 1844, Christian Wilhelm was awarded the commentary cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown by Faber du Faur , which was associated with the personal title of nobility.
