Christian von Borries (* 1961 in Zurich , Switzerland ) is a German conductor , flautist , composer , producer and filmmaker who lives and works in Berlin.

Life

After studying in Freiburg, France and the USA, von Borries initially worked as solo flutist at the Zurich Opera House and became a conductor through discussions with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Carlos Kleiber . In 1998 he started the “music abuse” series, in which he presented unusual arrangements of classical works.

The series dealt with the possibilities of appropriation and the context of the reception of music. Pieces were played too quickly or too slowly or for the first or last time, fragments were added, sound recordings were integrated into live concerts, rooms were acoustically changed, used music was embellished and classical music was used up. In 2002, Christian von Borries was invited to the Lucerne Festival with “music abuse” . Together with Martin Hossbach, he founded the music label “Masse und Macht” in 2002, on which three releases have appeared on vinyl and CD to date .

From 2003 to 2004 he carried out the four events comprehensive series of concerts and performances " Psychogeography ". The events took place a. in the Cargolifterhalle and the Palast der Republik . One of the topics was the utilization of the most diverse places for playing and performing music, but also the historical stratification of the venues. In the Cargolifterhalle, for example, the audience was directly involved; they moved around the orchestra in hospital beds through the hall. Von Borries himself called this event "Bayreuth in Briesen-Brand - capitalism as a temple religion". In 2003 Christian von Borries was awarded the ECHO Klassik in the category “Classical music without borders” as the producer for the sampler “Replay Debussy” . The album brought together ten internationally renowned musicians, including Ryūichi Sakamoto and Jamie Lidell , who contributed their interpretation of Debussy 's Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune .

At the 2004 Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen, he and choirs from the Ruhr area organized a hymn evening, which earned him the name “ Gotthilf Fischer der Avantgarde ” ( Nicolas Stemann ). In 2005 he contributed to the replacement city weekend of the Volksbühne in Berlin with the piece “Peeping Around Corners”, which he performed with the RIAS youth orchestra. In 2006 Tannhäuser followed at the Deutsches Hof / Kabul with the Weimar State Orchestra , which performed "the Schlingensief of Classics" ( Die Welt ) at the Wartburg . For documenta 12 , von Borries conceived five musical scenes and a libretto together with the artists Alice Creischer and Andreas Siekmann under the title At once and at the same time - a feasibility study: Musical scenes for the negation of work . The play was performed in a shopping center on Königsplatz in Kassel. In 2007 Christian von Borries returned to the Volksbühne in Berlin with the overall direction of “Lulu or Why Does the Bourgeoisie Need Despair” with the video artist Catherine Sullivan and the Berliner Symphoniker .

Dealing with the technique of sampling and von Borries's criticism of copyright law in music resulted in the proposal for a national anthem for Kosovo in 2008 , which arose from a sample mash-up of the German, Serbian, Albanian and European anthems. Von Borries wrote about this in his column for the music magazine Spex : “The 1999 NATO attack on Serbia, logistically supported by the UÇK terror network, and by 'Joy of beautiful gods spark', the NATO and EU anthem, was the third in the 20th Century with German participation. Von Borries presented his first film in 2010 with “The Dubai in Me” . The film addresses the discrepancy between the images of Dubai and his dream of unleashed growth around the world, and the sadness, suffering and lack of rights of the workers that you really find on site.

Von Borries attracted attention with his newly built house in Berlin. Together with the Berlin architects Martin Heberle and Christof Mayer, inspired by the French architects Lacaton & Vassal , he and his partner Vera Tollmann built a house consisting of greenhouse parts and a heated core on an old factory in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen . The couple managed to stay below € 600 per square meter. The Technical University of Berlin even invited him, together with the architect Arno Brandlhuber , to a work report, put by von Borries under the title News from the Temple of Hegemony .

In the winter semester 2010/2011 he was a visiting professor at the chair for architecture and urban research at the AdbK in Nuremberg . At the beginning of 2011, Christian von Borries was busy preparing another film.
