The Society's library, like the Schmallenberg City Archives, is housed in the listed “ Narrow House ”.

The Christine Koch Society is the largest literary association in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is named after the writer Christine Koch , but its content covers the entire spectrum of literature.

development

The association was founded in 1993 as a society for the promotion of literature in the Sauerland in Schmallenberg . The company has since been located in Schmallenberg, where the second Westphalian poets' meeting took place years earlier . The founding members included the founding chairman Dietmar Rost , the literary scholar Wilhelm Gössmann , the authors Norbert Klaus Fuchs , Carola Matthiesen and Paul Tigges , the doctor and writer Michael Soeder and the Schmallenberg mayor Bernhard Halbe .

When it was founded, the company was closely associated with the museum in Holthausen . There was a certain degree of competition to the Esloher machine and local history museum and the Christine Koch archive connected to it, which had been built up since 1987. Both sides worked in parallel on the new edition of Christine Koch's works. While the Holthaus edition aimed at a larger audience and only wanted to bring Koch's most important Low German poems together, the Esloh edition aimed at a broad-based edition of works. In the meantime, both institutions have found cooperation and division of labor through personal links.

activities

The Christine Koch Society focuses on maintaining romantic and classical poetry, pre-March and Enlightenment, as well as regional literature and dialect. She also runs workshops for young people across Westphalia to promote young literature. Events and readings are held in churches, synagogues, castles and on ships. The society also maintains a Sauerland literature archive in Schmallenberg with around 2000 periodicals and books. There is also a close cooperation with the Arnsberg Literary Society .

Since 1994 the foundation has published 20 anthologies containing texts by over 150 contemporary authors.

The current chairman is Johann J. Claßen . The magazine Der Edelrabe appears periodically . The association has almost 300 members in North Rhine-Westphalia.
