Christ the King Church

The Christ the King's Church in Klagenfurt belongs to the parish of St. Egid . It was built in 1931/32 according to plans by Karl Holey and consecrated in 1932 by Bishop Hefter .

Building description

The Christ the King's Church is a single-nave, towerless hall building , which is connected with the building complex of the diocesan house with its east side, which is just closing. On the west facade made of green chlorite slate masonry is the portal with a straight end and three narrow high windows with round arches. The same window design can be found on the nave walls. The stainless steel figure of an angel in front of the main entrance was created by Tomas Hoke in 1993/95 .

The inside festoon ceiling is painted with frescoes by Hans Fischer. Depicted are the birth of Christ, the Last Supper , the crucifixion and angels. Heinrich Tahedl's original stained glass windows on the portal front were destroyed in the war and restored in 1991 by his daughter Ernestine Tahedl.

Furnishing

The high altar, created in 1675, comes from the former St. Veiter Bürgerspitalkirche . The altar with monumental triumphal arch architecture, high, refined plinth and sacrificial passage portals has volutes on the gable that are turned outwards and a small aedicula as a top. The twisted column shafts are decorated with strings of pearls and cartilaginous fittings . The main picture represents the mercy seat and is flanked by the statues of John the Evangelist and John the Baptist . The top picture is the work of the painter Hans Fischer and shows the royal crown of Christ on the book with the seven seals . The brass tabernacle comes from Wilhelm Bormann . During Lent, a Lenten cloth from the second half of the 16th century, which originally belonged to the Maria Bichl Church near Feicht, covers the altar.

On the side walls of the nave are four side altars created by Wilhelm Bormann, the canteens of which were removed in 1971. On the north wall are the Hemma and Mary altars, on the south wall the Evangelist altar and the altar of the Carinthian saints. The relief work made of fired and glazed clay was created by the sculptor Wilhelm Bormann based on drawings by Karl Holey and manufactured in the Wienerberger brick factory . The four baroque apostle figures on consoles come from the Lieseregg parish church .
