Life

Sturm, the son of an imperial notary and court actuary, is a descendant of Johann Sturm . He studied theology at the University of Jena from 1760, where he passed the examination for a master's degree in philosophy in 1761. In 1761 he moved to Halle to continue his studies. In 1763 he became a teacher at the pedagogy in Halle, in 1765 he received the post of vice-principal in Sorau in Niederlausitz, in 1767 he became a preacher at the Marktkirche in Halle, in 1769 at the Holy Spirit Church in Magdeburg and on April 26, 1778 as chief pastor of St. Peter's in Hamburg, where he met with Johann Melchior Goeze had to deal with. Some of his song poems were set to music by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach . The French translation of the reflections on the works of God in the kingdom of nature and providence was written by Queen Christine of Prussia and appeared in Geneva in 1788 in three volumes.
