Christoph D. Garlichs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christoph D. Garlichs (born February 10, 1965 in Oldenburg ) is a German cardiologist and angiologist , executive senior physician and professor at the University of Erlangen .

Origin and education

Garlichs was the second of four children of Ulrich Garlichs (a brother of Ariane Garlichs and Dietrich Garlichs ) and his wife Ingeborg geb. Stahmer born in Oldenburg. After graduating from high school, he studied medicine.

Professional development

Garlichs his doctorate with a thesis in the area of vasoactive metabolism of granulocytes Dr. med. After further training as an internist, he specialized further as a cardiologist and angiologist. In 2008 he was awarded the venia legendi as a private lecturer and adjunct professor at the Medical Clinic 2 - Cardiology, Angiology at the University of Erlangen. He also became a senior physician there. In 2012 he was appointed professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Focus of activity

Since the beginning of his university career, Garlichs has primarily been concerned with biochemical aspects of his subject in research. He investigates the effect of cellular and humoral variables on the peripheral arterial system , the heart membrane , the heart valves and the coronary arteries as well as the cerebral vessels , in particular with regard to inflammatory processes , atherosclerosis , myocardial infarction , chronic cardiac insufficiency , compensated cerebral blood flow disorders and strokes . The research is based on the knowledge that one of the first pathological changes in the artery system is often inflammation of the vessels and the inner surface of the heart, which are initially reversible . Only in a further step are atherosclerotic deposits added under unfavorable circumstances, which are difficult or impossible to reverse.

In addition to the established laboratory diagnostics , Garlichs develops and uses a very diverse experimental environment , such as cell and tissue cultures , hemodynamically designed vessel models that include typical flow vortices and expansion, vessel explants and other organ preparations, genetic and blood pressure variants as well clinical studies .

The cellular influencing variables examined by Garlichs and his working group include, for example, monocytes , plasma cells , dendrites and their precursors and various immune cells .

The humoral factors examined by Garlichs and co-workers primarily include those of the immune system such as interferon , tumor necrosis factor , interleukins , and extracellular-signal regulated kinase , protein kinases , nitrogen oxides , cyclooxygenases and prostaglandins . In addition, he investigates beneficial and disadvantageous genetic constellations, circulating and tissue-related hormones such as prolactin , leptin and growth hormones such as vascular endothelial growth factor , but also protective dietetic compounds such as resveratrol , and finally fat-lowering drugs such as statins and anti-inflammatory drugs such as angiotensin II receptor -Blocker.

In his clinical work, Garlichs applies the theoretical knowledge mainly in the field of intensive care medicine .

Garlichs is also a member of the interdisciplinary research project "EFI Emerging Fields Initiative" launched by the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg at the end of 2011, which aims to determine whether and, if so, in what way tissues and organs can best be grown for healing purposes.
