Christoph Engel (lawyer)

Christoph Engel (born February 22, 1956 in Cologne ) is a German lawyer and since 1997 Director of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn .

Life

Christoph Engel studied law at the University of Tübingen and received his doctorate there in 1988. From 1980 to 1983 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Tübingen and from 1983 to 1992 at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law . There he dealt with private law and media and communication law. In 1992 he completed his habilitation under Ernst-Joachim Mestmäcker at the MPI for Foreign and International Private Law in Hamburg. In 1992 he became a full professor at the University of Osnabrück and remained so until 1997. There he held the chair for media law. In 1997 he became head of the legal project group on common goods in Bonn . Since 2003 he has been director of the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods, which emerged from the project group. In 2003 he also became a full professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . Since 2004 he has been an honorary professor at the University of Osnabrück. Since 2013 he has also been Professor of Experimental Legal Studies at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since 2002 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea . In 2017 the Hebrew University of Jerusalem awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Florian Becker , Indra Spiecker , Stefan Magen, Niels Petersen and Jörn Lüdemann completed their habilitation under his supervision . Engel was a member of the board of the Association of German Constitutional Law Teachers from 2007 to 2009 and chairman of the humanities, social and human sciences section of the Max Planck Society from 2013 to 2016. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Empirical Legal Studies since 2015 . Engel was co-editor of the trade journals Rabels Zeitschrift (1990–2007) and Archive for Press Law (1994–2013). Today he is co-editor of the Law and Economics of International Telecommunications series and Editor-in-Chief of the Review of Law and Economics .

On July 10, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences .

He is married.
