Christoph Heinrich (art historian)

Christoph Heinrich (* 1960 in Idstein , Hessen ) is a German art historian and curator . He is the director of the Denver Art Museum (DAM).

Heinrich studied art history, modern German literature, theater studies and directing at the universities in Munich and Vienna , as well as at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. In 1993 he received his doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich with a thesis on the change in the concept of monument in the 1980s.

In 1994 Heinrich became a curator at the Hamburger Kunsthalle , whose contemporary gallery he has headed as curator since it opened in 1997. Heinrich organized more than 40 exhibitions in Hamburg, some of which had international appeal. The exhibition Andy Warhol - Photographer with the large photographic work complexes of the artist was shown in the USA in the Andy Warhol Museum , Pittsburgh and in the International Center of Photography , New York. The retrospective exhibition Daniel Richter curated by him in the Hamburger Kunsthalle had a record in 2007 with 120,000 visitors. He was a jury member of the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Art Commission of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Denver Art Museum

In October 2007, Heinrich moved to the Denver Art Museum (DAM) in Denver , Colorado, as a curator for modern and contemporary art . In January 2009 he was appointed deputy director and on January 1, 2010 - as successor to Lewis I. Sharp - appointed director of the museum. Daniel Libeskind had previously created a spectacular extension for the DAM. Heinrich also showed a large overview exhibition of Daniel Richter’s work in Denver, the artist’s first museum exhibition in the USA.

Heinrich is the author and editor of numerous works on painting and sculpture in the 19th and 20th centuries, including on Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Daniel Richter. He is married to art professor Kira van Lil and the couple have two children.

On June 8, 2016, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung listed him as one of the two most promising candidates to succeed Max Hollein as director of the Frankfurt museum association Städel / Schirn / Liebieghaus . One day later Heinrich canceled.
