Christoph Kuffner
Christoph Kuffner (born June 28, 1780 in Vienna ; † November 7, 1846 there ) was an Austrian poet .
Life
Christoph Kuffner was Konzipist the kk War Council and from 1818 editor of the influential Vienna periodical for art, literature and fashion , by Johann Schickh was founded and edited. The magazine was published from 1816 to 1848 and is one of the most important sources on Viennese cultural life.
Today Kuffner is best known as the lyricist of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy op. 80 . Since Beethoven himself was dissatisfied with the text and kept silent about the lyricist (the first edition also appeared without the lyricist being named), it was a long time controversial who wrote the text for the work. However, in a review of the premiere, which Beethoven himself conducted on December 22, 1808, Kuffner is explicitly named as a lyricist. Beethoven's student Carl Czerny also names him as the work's lyricist.
In 1826, Kuffner wrote the libretto for an oratorio Saul for Beethoven, but Saul could no longer set it to music.
