Christoph Meinel (2004)

Christoph Meinel (born April 14, 1954 in Meißen ) is a German computer scientist and professor for Internet technologies and systems at the University of Potsdam . In 2019 he was appointed to the "New Internet IPv6 Hall of Fame".

Life

Meinel studied 1974-1979 mathematics and computer science at the Humboldt University of Berlin , was in 1981 on issues of complexity theory doctorate (Dr. rer. Nat.) And (Dr. sc. Nat.) Habilitated in 1988 with the signature branching Modified programs and their computational power . From 1992 to 2004 he was professor for theoretical concepts and new applications in computer science at the University of Trier . From 1996 to 2002 he was founding director of the Institut für Telematik e. V. in Trier, which dealt with issues in the field of Internet and web technologies under the supervision of the Fraunhofer Society. From 1995 to 2007 he was a member of the scientific directorate of the International Meeting and Research Center for Computer Science at Schloss Dagstuhl . From 2002 to 2010 he was visiting professor and senior research fellow at the University of Luxembourg , he is honorary professor at the School of Computer Sciences at the Technical University of Beijing ( People's Republic of China ), and visiting professor at the universities of Shanghai and Dalian. Since 2004 Meinel has been institute director and managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH (HPI) and dean of the "Digital Engineering" faculty at the University of Potsdam. He is a member of acatech , the national German academy of technical sciences, and a teacher at the HPI School of Design Thinking.

research

Meinel's work focus was initially on theoretical computer science , and here in the area of complexity theory and binary decision diagrams . Later he dealt with Internet technologies , IT security and new forms of teaching and learning on the Internet, such as teleteaching and e-learning with tele-TASK and openHPI . He then did research on information and internet security issues, e.g. B. the highly secure network protection Lock-Keeper , the protection against undesired and offensive content and the security in service-based architectures with applications in telemedicine. He also deals scientifically with questions of knowledge management on the Internet and new forms of Internet-based teaching and learning tele-TASK. He heads the HPI-Stanford research program on design thinking and develops tools for remote collaboration between distributed design teams.

The online platform openHPI.de , developed under his leadership, offers interactive online courses, so-called MOOCs ( Massive Open Online Course ), on topics relating to digitization technologies. More than 700,000 learners are enrolled (as of Feb. 2020). openHPI also offers qualified certificates for conducting online courses. The identity of the course participants is verified via the webcam and online learning opportunities and certifications are given weight.

In addition, Christoph Meinel is involved in the field of digital education in schools and heads nationwide working groups that develop concepts and safe working environments for future learning. The projects "Bildungscloud" and "HPI Schul-Cloud" go back to his initiative, which provide a low-threshold access to digital educational offers and enable the use of digital educational offers in the German education sector and in German schools in compliance with data protection regulations. The HPI School Cloud, which has meanwhile been funded by the BMBF and developed under its leadership, offers teachers and students a data protection-compliant digital learning environment in which they can securely save and exchange their texts, presentations and data and in which they can access learning software from various providers in pseudonymised form. The HPI Schul-CLoud is in use at more than 300 schools (as of February 2020) in various federal states

Meinel is the owner of various international patents ( e.g. Lock-Keeper ) and has developed the teleteaching system tele-TASK and the online collaboration tool Tele-Board.

editor

Meinel is the initiator and responsible for the online learning platform openHPI . He is editor of the book series Understanding Innovation by Springer-Verlag and the scientific e-journal ECDTR - Electronic Colloquium on Design Thinking Research. Meinel was a co-founder and developer of the ECCC - Electronic Colloquium on Computational Complexity and was editor of the online journal on complexity theory until 2016.

Science organization

Meinel heads the Steering Committee of the HPI Future SOC Lab, is Chairman of the German IPv6 Council, member of the board of the MINT-EC Association and is a member of the Security Advisory Board of SAP. Together with Hasso Plattner, he hosted the 1st National IT Summit (HPI, Potsdam, 2006) of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and, together with Larry Leifer from Stanford University, is the initiator and program director of the HPI-Stanford Design Thinking Research Program, which started in 2008 . In 2019 Christoph Meinel was inducted into the New Internet IPv6 Hall of Fame . This honored his commitment to the development and dissemination of the new IPv6 Internet protocol standard over decades.

Meinel on creditworthiness-related data mining in connection with a previously planned cooperation with Schufa

After public criticism, the Hasso Plattner Institute, headed by Meinel, abandoned the plan in 2012 to research, on behalf of Schufa , which information from the Internet would allow statements about the creditworthiness of people. Meinel defended the data mining project , as it was important to research the meaningfulness of publicly available data if companies were to collect it uncritically and draw conclusions e.g. B. to overindebtedness . He pointed out that technology can always be used bivalently and that it is the task of science to question what is technically possible.

“From an ethical point of view, of course, not everything is allowed that is not prohibited. As scientists, we examine technology, show its potential and its risks. Abuse of the techniques is just as possible as good use; this applies to all techniques. And yes, unfortunately a lot of energy goes into the misuse of techniques, just think of the hacker scene on the Internet. "
