Christoph Theodosius Walther (born December 20, 1699 in Schildberg near Soldin , Neumark , † April 29, 1741 in Dresden ) was a pietistic preacher , philologist and missionary of the Danish-English-Halle mission in Tranquebar, southern India .

Life

After the early death of his father, a Protestant pastor, Walther came into the care of his maternal grandfather, pastor David Torfstecher, at the age of 7, who ensured that the boy received a solid education. After graduating from high school, Walther initially worked as a teacher, but became increasingly enthusiastic about the idea of missions and began studying theology in Halle in 1720. At the end of 1724 he traveled to India as a missionary, from where he - in bad health - did not return until the spring of 1740 after a 15-year stay. Walther died less than a year later and was buried in the Elias cemetery. His estate with numerous manuscripts and letters about his life and work in India is kept in the archive of the Francke Foundations in Halle .
