Christoph de Bach
Christoph de Bach (* 1768 in Mitau , Duchy of Courland and Semgallia ; † April 12, 1834 in Vienna ) was Vienna's first circus director .
After the first modern circus emerged from the English equestrian companies in London in 1772 by Philip Astley , permanent circuses were also built in continental Europe.
One of the pioneers in this field was Christoph de Bach from Courland. In 1808 he had a wooden building built by Joseph Kornhäusel in Vienna's Prater on what is still known today as the circus meadow . Bach's “ Circus gymnasticus ” offered around 3,000 spectators and was mainly dedicated to artistic horse shows. In addition, Bazazzi appeared, and comic scenes of transformation were also performed. De Bach also began early with pantomimes and mimo dramas.
Christoph de Bach, kk privileged art and school trainer, received a splendid burial in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof , his widow Laura de Bach continued to run the circus business for a few years.
