Christopher Hollyday

Christopher Hollyday (* 3. January 1970 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) is an American jazz - saxophonist and teacher.

Christopher Hollyday began performing in clubs at the age of 14 and recorded an album on his own Jazzbeat label at an early age ; Stylistically, he was initially based on Charlie Parker , later on Jackie McLean . In 1988 he appeared with his own formation in New York's Village Vanguard , in 1989 he went on tour with the Maynard Ferguson Big Band.

He is referred to by Allmusic as one of the "Young Lions" of the late 1980s; he became known for four albums that he recorded between 1989 and 1992 for the RCA Novus label . On his debut album he was accompanied by Wallace Roney , Cedar Walton , David Williams and Billy Higgins ; on the later albums played u. a. John Lockwood , Larry Goldings and Brad Mehldau . In January 1992 the big band album And I'll Sing Once More , which is formally strongly reminiscent of Miles Ahead , was created . a. John Clark , Mark Feldman , Scott Colley , Kenny Werner , Scott Robinson and Douglas Purviance participated. Thereafter, his career was abruptly interrupted when his record contract with RCA Novus was not renewed. Hollyday then began working as a teacher, first in 1997 at Orange Glen High School in Escondido . In 1998 he moved to Valley Center High School in Valley Center (California) , where he has taught and worked with jazz ensemble classes and the school band ever since. Hollyday received his Masters degree from San Diego State University in 2004/2005 .
