Douglas Purviance (* 1952 in Baltimore ) is an American jazz bass trombonist (also trombone , tuba , snail horn ).

Purviance graduated from Towson State University in 1975 ; In 1992 he received his Masters from the Manhattan School of Music . He began his career from 1975-77 with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, where he played bass trombone and tuba . In the following years he was mainly employed as a studio and session musician. From 1977 he lived in New York City , where he a. a. played in the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and in the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. He also toured with Slide Hampton , Steve Turre , Dizzy Gillespie , and the Mingus Big Band .

He participated in numerous recordings, including a. at Joe Henderson , Sam Rivers , Bill Kirchner , Bill Warfield , Jon Faddis , Garry Dial , Frank Wess , Mario Bauzá , Bobby Watson , Michel Camilo , Richie Cole , JJ Johnson , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Tom Harrell , Stefon Harris , Gerald Wilson , Ron Carter , Christian McBride and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra . In the field of jazz he was involved in 106 recording sessions between 1975 and 2011.
