The Christ Church in Prien am Chiemsee is the Evangelical - Lutheran Church in Prien am Chiemsee .

history

The Protestant parish in Prien am Chiemsee had only 89 members in 1921. Nevertheless, she decided to build her own church. As architect was German Bestelmeyer be won. He designed a building that could hold 150 people. The foundation stone for the church was laid on July 24, 1926.

Building design

building

Bestelmeyer designed an octagon with a tent roof , a small porch as the entrance area and a compact church tower with an onion dome placed next to the building . Stylistically , the building shows elements of the Heimatschutz style and historicism . The design was very much appreciated at the time it was made and the model was shown at various exhibitions. The church was consecrated on July 29, 1927. Next to the church is the rectory .

Today the church is a cultural monument due to the monument protection law of the Free State of Bavaria .

Interior

Former altarpiece

The ensemble of baptismal font , altar table and pulpit consisted of red Ruhpolding marble and was made to designs by Bestelmeyer. While the last two items of equipment were removed during the renovation in 1997/1998, the font remained in its place. The reliefs of the four evangelists on the south side of the church originally adorned the pulpit, which was removed in 1997, and are by Markus Heinlein .

The rest of the furniture and the coffered ceiling were made of untreated larch wood. Above the altar was an altarpiece , which today adorns the east wall of the church as a museum. In historical style it combines a central, carved crucifixion scene by Friedrich Lommel , painted “wings” with four scenes from the life of Jesus by Paul Roloff and ornamental carving by Markus Heinlein.

The altar table used today was set up during the renovation in 1997/1998. It stands on three carved legs and is also made of larch wood, the table top is made of maple .

The three windows positioned relatively high in the church interior were designed with stained glass windows by the Prien artist Markus von Gossen after 1958 . They show the announcement of the birth of Christ to the shepherds, the risen Christ and a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit . A fourth, round window by Markus von Gossen , which shows the symbols of the four evangelists, is in the parish hall.

Conversions

In 1964 the rectory and church were structurally connected by a parish hall . In order to be able to use the parish hall as an extension of the church, the north wall of the church was broken through. Today it is closed with a large wooden door. This breakthrough makes it possible to use both rooms as a unit if necessary. The architect of the renovation was Gustav Gsaenger .

In 1997/1998 the interior of the church was redesigned in line with changed liturgical requirements. The architect was Peter Schorr . The frontal alignment of the bench seats was abandoned. They were set up in two blocks facing each other at an angle of about 120 degrees . The pedestal of the sanctuary was removed together with the altar table and the floor as a whole was lowered so that the transition to the parish hall became stepless. Since then, an artistically designed wooden table has served as the altar, which has been moved further into the center of the church. The pulpit was removed and replaced with a lectern. The former altarpiece is now on the north wall. The altar plate of the distant old altar was set into the wall below as an “optical base”.

organ

In 1989 an organ with two manuals and 16 registers by Gerhard Schmid was installed.

Remarks

  1. Hoffmann, p. 5, claims that the model was shown at world exhibitions in Budapest and Berlin . A world exhibition never took place in Budapest, in Berlin “world exhibitions” (trade exhibitions) were shown in 1879 and 1896, long before there was a model of the church.
