The Christ Church in Windhoek is a church of the Windhoeker Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (DELK) , built from 1907 to 1910 . It is considered a symbol of the city.

The building of the church was suggested in April 1896 by the pastor Wilhelm Anz; the designs came from the architect Gottlieb Redecker . After the end of the wars between Germans and the Nama , Herero and Ovambo , it was consecrated on October 16, 1910. The church, which was built in a neo-Romanesque style with Art Nouveau influences, stands elevated in Windhoek-Central , the historic center of Windhoek. Like the rest of the church, the 24 m high church tower is made of quartz sandstone . The exception are the portal and the altar, which are made of marble . The sandstone, the only local building material, comes from the Guche-Ganus farm, about 30 km away. The colored glazing in the chancel was donated by Kaiser Wilhelm II and manufactured in Nuremberg . The organ was manufactured in Ludwigsburg by the well-known organ building company EF Walcker & Cie . The three bells of the Christ Church were cast in 1910 by the Franz Schilling bell foundry in Apolda .

Trivia

After the long transport, the windows were installed the wrong way round, with the inside out. This was only noticed towards the end of the last century when an expert on stained glass windows visited the church as a tourist. After that, all windows were removed and the former outside turned inwards, which increased the artistic value of the windows.
