( Poll & Thys van den Audenaerde , 1967)

Chromidotilapia schoutedeni is a species of cichlid that occurs in the eastern Congo Basin , in small tributaries of the Lualaba and has alsobeen detectedin several places in the catchment area of central Congo , including the Boyoma Falls .

features

The fish species can reach a total length of 10 cm, but only adult males reach this length, females remain a little smaller. The fish have a pointed snout and an only slightly curved forehead profile. They are of a brownish basic color and show a few irregular and blurred dark brown bands on the sides of the body. Like the females of Günther's magnificent perch ( Chromidotilapia guntheri ), the females of Chromidotilapia schoutedeni have a metallic shimmering longitudinal ligament in their dorsal fin. In addition, in some cases they show some larger black spots there and in the upper area of the caudal fin. When the females are ready to spawn, their belly is red. The fish have 16 scales around the tail stalk.

The way of life, nutrition and reproductive biology of the fish have not yet been researched. Chromidotilapia schoutedeni is probably also an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1967 by the Belgian ichthyologists Poll and Thys van den Audenaerde under the scientific name Pelmatochromis schoutedeni and named after Henri Schouteden , a former director of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren , Belgium . It was later assigned to the genus Chromidotilapia . Chromidotilapia schoutedeni has the easternmost range of this genus, the other species come from the Cavally on the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast to the mouth of the Congo , and it is geographically separated from that of the other species. C. schoutedeni looks more like a Pelvicachromis or Parananochromis species than the other Chromidotilapia species. It is slimmer and more elongated and in the females the pectoral fins are rounded, in the males they are pointed. This feature is typical of Pelvicachromis species. In contrast to the other Chromidotilapia species, Chromidotilapia schoutedeni has only four sensory pores on the Lacrymale . In a phylogenetic study of Chromidotilapiini it was found that Chromidotilapia schoutedeni is the sister species of a clade of Congochromis and Nanochromis . A separate genus must therefore be introduced for the species.
