Henri Eugene Alphonse Hubert Schouteden (born May 3, 1881 in Ixelles , † November 15, 1972 in Auderghem ) was a Belgian entomologist , ornithologist and zoologist .

Life

Schouteden was the son of Aubert Alphonse and Sophe Schouteden, nee Wing. After graduating from the Institute Saint-Boniface in Ixelles, he completed a degree in zoology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1900 , where he received his doctorate in natural sciences with the highest distinction in 1905 . In August 1908 he married Josephine Wery (1879–1954), who was a botanist, ethnologist and archaeologist and who supported him in his scientific work.

In 1910 he became curator of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, which was officially opened by King Albert I in the same year . At the same time, Schouteden took over the post of general secretary of the Société royale belge d'entomologie, whose president he later became twice, and of the Société royale zoologique de Belgique.

In 1911 he founded the journal Revue de Zoologie africaine , from which later the Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique africaine emerged , which made an important contribution to the dissemination of knowledge about the zoology of Africa.

In 1919 he was appointed head of the zoological department of the Royal Museum for Central Africa and undertook two expeditions to the Belgian Congo from 1920 to 1922 and from 1924 to 1926 . In 1923 he founded the Cercle Zoologique Congolais to promote the collection of zoological specimens. In the following years he became a professor at the Université coloniale de Belgique and at the Prins Leopold Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde in Antwerp, where he taught until 1952 and 1954 respectively. In 1927 Schouteden became an ornithologist and honorary director at the Royal Museum for Central Africa, a position he held until his retirement in 1946. He then stayed with the museum as a volunteer research assistant until his death. During Schouteden's tenure, the collections of the various departments were expanded considerably and the museum gained international renown as a first-class scientific institution.

Schouteden's first publication on rare Schnabelkerfe in Belgium dates back to 1899 and in 1890 he published a work on aphids in Belgium, an important work based almost entirely on his own studies. His book De Zoogdieren van Belgisch Congo en van Ruanda-Urundi , which was written during the Second World War, was published in 1946. In this book, Henri Schouteden used numerous maps to show the distribution area of each species. A shortened French edition, without maps but with numerous photos, was published in 1948.

In addition to over 1000 insect species (eg. A plurality of taxa of the genus Rhynocoris and Kitoko Alberti , Palophus Bayeri , Palophus leopoldi , Charaxes overlaeti , Pseudomacromia regis Alberti , Ictinus regis Alberti and Distomma selysi ) described Schouteden among others, the amoebas genus Awerintzewia , the Kongoberghäherling ( Kupeornis chapini ) that Lendusylvietta ( Sylvietta chapini ), the Tufted-Brillenvanga ( Prionops Alberti ) which Kongomaskeneule (Phodilus prigoginei ), the subspecies Geokichla crossleyi pilettei the Crossleydrossel , the subspecies Lonchura bicolor woltersi of Glanzelsterchens , the subspecies Linurgus olivaceus prigoginei of oriole Gimpel , the subspecies Sylvia lugens prigoginei the brown warbler , the Opdenbosch Mangabey ( Lophocebus opdenboschi ), the subspecies Heliophobius argenteocinereus mottoulei of silver Gray auger and the subspecies Heliophobius argenteocinereus mottoulei the Crested Mona monkey .

In 1954 the work Miscellanea Zoologica H. Schouteden appeared , in which different authors in honor of Schouteden four new genera, 47 new species and three new subspecies, mainly insects, but also other invertebrates such as arachnids, puntipods and worms, as well as vertebrates such as fish and amphibians , Birds and mammals.

Honors and Dedication Names

In 1963 Schouteden was awarded the Prix décennal for zoological sciences by the Belgian government. Since 1965 the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten has awarded the Henri Schouteden Prize for outstanding original works (preferably on Africa) on the systematics, ecology, ethology or anatomy of animals. Schouteden is honored in the epithets of numerous species and subspecies of vertebrates and invertebrates, including the bug species Ammianus schoutedeni (1908, by William Lucas Distant ), the bigeye tetra species Brycinus schoutedeni (1912, by George Albert Boulenger ), the beetle species Acramorphocephalus schoutedeni (1918, by Richard Kleine ), the ant species Aenictogiton schoutedeni (1924, by Felix Santschi ), the Congo puffer ( Tetraodon schoutedeni ) (1926, by Jacques Pellegrin ), the Schouteden thicket rat ( Thamnomys schoutedeni ) (1934, by Robert Torrens Hatt ), the snake species Helophis schoutedeni (1942, by Gaston-François de Witte ), the bug species Angilia schoutedeni (1942, by Raymond Poisson ), the subspecies Sylvietta ruficapilla schoutedeni of the Red-eared Sylvietta (1953, by Charles MN White ), the subspecies Phylloscopus laetus schoutedeni of the Braunwangen -Laubsängers (1955, by Alexandre Prigogine ), Schoutedens big- headed shrew ( Paracrocidura schou tedeni ) (1956, by Henri Heim de Balsac ) and the cichlid species Chromidotilapia schoutedeni (1967, by Max Poll and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde ). In 1960 Prigogine described the Schouteden sailor as Apus schoutedeni , which was transferred to the genus Schoutedenapus newly established by Antoon De Roo in 1968 . Schouteden's name is also associated with the genera Schoutedenia , Schoutedeniella , Schoutedenius , Schoutedeniastes , Schoutedenidea and Schoutedenichia .
