Richard Kleine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Kleine (born July 4, 1874 in Magdeburg , † April 10, 1948 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German entomologist , coleopterologist and phytopathologist . His main research interests were the families of the red-cap beetles (Lycidae) and the long beetles (Brentidae).

Life

Kleine was born the son of a master carpenter in Magdeburg. His passion for plants and insects was nurtured from an early age by his mother, who was an avid flower grower, by taking him on her resin botanical tours. Under pressure from his father, he learned the printing trade in Magdeburg, spent a few years as a journeyman in the Rhineland and worked from 1899 to 1910 as a machine foreman in Halle (Saale). In 1911 he gave up his profession and became assistant to Kurt Störmer (1878-1950) at the plant protection station of the Chamber of Agriculture for the Province of Saxony . In 1912 he moved to the Institute for Plant Production of the Chamber of Agriculture for the Province of Pomerania in Szczecin . In 1924 he was appointed head of the plant protection department and the seed testing agency, and in 1928 he was appointed to the Chamber of Agriculture.

In 1937 he retired and in 1938 he became a volunteer at the Museum of Natural History in Szczecin, until he had to leave the city in March 1945 during the evacuation. Kleine and his wife were initially accommodated in Zettemin and Pinnow before they returned to Halle (Saale) in 1946. Little Frau died in 1947 and in April 1948 he died of complications from tuberculosis .

Small bibliography comprises 417 entomological titles and a similar number of phytopathological publications dealing with weeds and their control, fungal diseases of cereals and forage crops, dressing of cereals, cultivation and diseases of potatoes, including potato canker, beet diseases and other questions of plant protection deal. Among the subjects of his insect pests include cumin moth , the pea moth , the cabbage looper , the Wintersaateule , the drugstore beetle , the Rübenaaskäfer , flea beetles , weevils , frit fly , Weizenhalmfliege , corn flower fly , onion maggot and the bark beetle .

For a long time it was assumed that Kleines's collection was destroyed during World War II, but in 2004 it turned out that part of it was transported from Szczecin to Warsaw, where it is still housed in the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences .
