Chueca is a neighborhood in the center of the Spanish capital, Madrid . The district got its name from a small square, the Plaza de Chueca , which is located in the middle of the district and is reminiscent of the Spanish composer Federico Chueca . The Chueca metro station is located in Plaza de Chueca.

Until the 1990s, Chueca was a dangerous neighborhood with drug-related crime and prostitution. That has changed since gays and lesbians to the district have assumed apartments bought and shops have opened and the here lesbian and gay district has established in Madrid. In the meantime, Chueca has developed into the largest and best-known gay and lesbian district in Spain. Restaurants, cafes, designer shops, boutiques and discos have sprung up. In his cultural history of homosexuality in Spain in the 20th century , Alberto Mira speaks of the “Chueca phenomenon”, which “reflects the normalization, visibility and commercialization of gay and lesbian people”. It also means the coexistence of people of different sexual orientations, which leads to an old lady hoisting a rainbow flag on her balcony for Christopher Street Day (CSD) as a district festival. Every year there is now a CSD parade that attracts Spaniards and foreign guests.

In May 2016, the mayoress Carmen Carmela named one of the most important squares in the neighborhood to Pedro Zerolo Square, in memory of the lawyer, activist and leader of the Spanish Socialist Party, Pedro Zerolo, who died in the same year and who was strongly committed to same-sex marriage.
